The Arena and the Maison Carrée
Among the best preserved amphitheatres of the Roman world, the Nîmes Arena still hosts shows, concerts and ferias. Opposite the great curve of the Maison Carrée, a classically perfect ancient temple, stands the Museum of Romanity, with its boldly contemporary design. A date mixing culture and architecture, followed by a terrace on Place du Marché, never disappoints.
Fountain Gardens and Tour Magne
The first public garden in Europe, the Fountain Gardens, laid out in the 18th century, embrace the remains of the ancient sanctuary, including the Temple of Diana. A gentle sloping path climbs up to the Tour Magne, which has watched over the city for more than 2,000 years. On a clear day, you can glimpse the sea. A walk that lets each person pick the pace, with plenty of stops.
Towards the Pont du Gard
Twenty-five kilometres from Nîmes, the Pont du Gard, a huge three-tier Roman aqueduct, is one of the most impressive sites in the region. You can swim at its foot, picnic there and walk around it. On Lyad, Nîmes members share their favourite ancient sites and cafés; it is up to you to find someone to travel back in time with.
